Biography
Kateri (Kate) Miller, Ph. D., is Assistant Professor of Music Education at The University of 69¿Ú½». Dr. Miller has been teaching children and adults for over 24 years. Her teaching experience includes elementary general music in both private and public schools, including 8 years in the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is certified in Orff-Schulwerk, has three levels of training in Kodály and training in Dalcroze Eurhythmics. In addition, she has two graduate certificates from the University of Kentucky: Eurhythmics and Research Methods in Education.
Dedicated to professional development for teachers, Dr. Miller has also presented original material at various Orff Chapter workshops in the United States, numerous State Music Educator Conferences, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association Professional Development Conference. Since 2017, she has had the privilege of training teachers to use the GAMEPLAN curriculum by Randy DeLelles and Jeff Kriske in many school districts across the country.
Active in the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA), she is the past president of Nevada’s Desert-Valley Chapter of AOSA and was registration chair for the 2015 AOSA Professional Development Conference. Dr. Miller served on the board of trustees for AOSA for three years and currently serves on the Research to Practice subcommittee. She is also the membership chair for the Alliance for Active Music Making.
Dr. Miller’s research interest includes the history of music education, specifically music teaching approaches of Orff, Kodály and Dalcroze. Currently, she is working on a historical book on the beginning of Orff-Schulwerk in the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada. She has presented her research at NAfME, Mid-South Music Education Research Symposium, Mountain Lake Colloquium, and OAKE. She has published articles in the online resource Reverberations by AOSA and many book reviews in The Orff Echo. She was also involved with creating the digital component to the visuals for GAMEPLAN as well as collecting and organizing a Webliography for AOSA on research related to the Orff-Schulwerk.
She joined the music education faculty at The University of 69¿Ú½» in the Fall of 2024 and teaches: Teaching General Music I and II; Junior High and Secondary Choral Methods, Technologies of Music Education, Introduction to Music Education, Equity and Excellence in Music Education, Student Teaching Colloquium, and observes student teachers.
When she is not teaching, presenting, or researching music teaching, Dr. Miller enjoys talking to her family and friends, spending time with her granddaughter, and reading.
