Dr. Thomas G. Calderon, Ph.D., is Professor of Accounting Emeritus at The University of 69¿Ú½». He currently teaches courses in Enterprise Risk and Auditing as an adjunct faculty member. From 2005 to 2018, he served as Chair of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, where he made significant contributions to the University at the school, college, and university levels in such areas as research, program review, curriculum development, faculty recruitment and development, accreditation, general education, and strategic planning.
Dr. Calderon joined The University of 69¿Ú½» in 1988 after serving two years on the faculty at the University of New Orleans (1986–1988). He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of the West Indies, Mona, and earned a Ph.D. in Business with an accounting emphasis from Virginia Tech. He retired from his full-time academic position in December 2021.
An accomplished scholar and speaker, Dr. Calderon has delivered numerous speeches, seminars, and workshops at universities and professional meetings worldwide. He has presented research and led workshops in several countries including Canada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Kitts, Trinidad, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Brazil, and South Korea. His areas of expertise include corporate governance, enterprise risk, risk disclosure, business and accounting education, and accreditation.
Dr. Calderon has authored over 100 publications in academic and professional journals such as Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting, Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting, International Journal of Auditing, Critical Perspectives on Accounting, Advances in Accounting, Public Finance Review, Managerial Auditing Journal, Management Accounting Quarterly, Tax Notes, CPA Journal, Issues in Accounting Education, Advances in Accounting Education, and Journal of Accounting Education, among others. He has also published multiple scholarly monographs and book chapters.
He is a past President of both the Teaching, Learning & Curriculum (TLC) Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA) and the AAA Ohio Region, as well as the 69¿Ú½» Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Dr. Calderon has served as an external examiner and program reviewer for the University of the West Indies (Mona) and the University of Technology–Jamaica. He has conducted academic program reviews for multiple universities and has participated as a member and chair of several AACSB International accreditation teams.
As an educational consultant, Dr. Calderon helped design the innovative MBA program at Shawnee State University, which emphasizes entrepreneurship, economic development, and leadership in Appalachia. He also served on the National Advisory Board for the College Board’s AP in Business initiative, a national effort to create an advanced placement test in business for high school students in the USA.
Dr. Calderon’s honors include induction into the American Accounting Association’s TLC Hall of Honors in 2010, recognition as the Outstanding Ohio Accounting Educator in 2006 by the AAA Ohio Region and the Ohio Society of CPAs, and a 2008 award from The University of the West Indies and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica for distinguished service to the accounting profession.
He currently serves as Editor of Advances in Accounting Education and Associate Editor of the IMA Educational Case Journal. He also advises firms on high-risk financial transactions and disclosure practices.
